{"id":5764,"date":"2025-10-09T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T11:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/10\/09\/the-uks-drive-towards-alternative-powered-vessels\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:18:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:18:51","slug":"the-uks-drive-towards-alternative-powered-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/the-uks-drive-towards-alternative-powered-vessels\/","title":{"rendered":"The UK\u2019s drive towards alternative powered vessels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This investment, running between 2026 and 2030, will support the next five years of clean maritime innovation, supporting the development of advanced solutions for electric, hydrogen, ammonia and methanol-powered vessels, as well as efficiency improvements for ferries, cargo ships and offshore wind vessels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new wave of investment is not just about technology, it\u2019s about creating a connected, innovative maritime ecosystem that leads the world in sustainable logistics,\u201d said a spokesperson from the Sustainable Ports Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe Sustainable Ports Association will continue to support collaboration between ports, researchers and industry to ensure the benefits of this funding are maximised nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decarbonising marine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The announcement outlines the second phase of UK SHORE, a programme designed to accelerate technologies that will help achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in domestic shipping by 2050, as set out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/environment-and-sustainability\/uk-earmarks-ports-as-key-to-carbon-free-shipping\/1500891.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy (MDS)<\/a> published earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch in 2022, UK SHORE has so far allocated GB\u00a3240 million in R&amp;D funding across more than 200 projects, supported over 500 organisations, including 250 SMEs, across all UK regions.
