{"id":5812,"date":"2025-10-27T11:02:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/10\/27\/watch-seagrass-shows-promising-recovery\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:02:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:02:00","slug":"watch-seagrass-shows-promising-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/projects-initiatives-greenport\/watch-seagrass-shows-promising-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Seagrass shows promising recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from UNSW took to the water at Penrhyn Estuary, Gamay Botany Bay to assess survival and growth rates of <em>Posidonia australis<\/em>, examining how the transplanted seagrass fragments were adapting to their new environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPosidonia seagrass meadows are increasingly rare in Sydney and NSW waters but incredibly important as nursery habitats for juvenile fish and endangered species such as White\u2019s seahorse,\u201d said Port Authority of NSW group executive, people, environment and legal, Amy Beaumont.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really encouraging to see the planted seagrass fragments establishing so well just three months after being moved from our holding tank nursery. Their progress is certainly promising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UNSW postdoctoral fellow and research spokesperson Dr Giulia Ferretto said the health check results are a positive sign for one of the state\u2019s most threatened marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeagrasses like Posidonia are crucial for supporting biodiversity, protecting coastlines from erosion, and capturing carbon,\u201d Dr Ferretto said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce damaged, Posidonia meadows rarely recover naturally, which makes this collaborative restoration work so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite heavy rainfall in recent months, the transplanted shoots have withstood freshwater inflows better than expected.
