{"id":5936,"date":"2025-12-10T13:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T13:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/12\/10\/watch-barcelonas-synthetic-fuels-strategy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:20:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:20:04","slug":"watch-barcelonas-synthetic-fuels-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/watch-barcelonas-synthetic-fuels-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Barcelona\u2019s synthetic fuels strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Central to the strategy is a shift toward synthetic fuels, biomethane and hydrogen, which look to position the port as a Mediterranean hub for next-generation energy.<\/p>\n<p>The plan includes more than 150 actions and \u20ac1.7 billion in related investments to accelerate the energy transition and support the decarbonisation of the container market, maritime logistics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/environment-and-sustainability\/renewable-fuels-drive-cruise-decarbonisation\/1505874.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cruise sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Energy Transition Plan marks port planning for the coming years and will transform our energy model, generating new business areas,\u201d said president Jos\u00e9 Alberto Carbonell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A major pillar is the development of a robust hydrogen economy, supported by the forthcoming H2MED pipeline connection, enabling large-scale production, port electrification import and distribution.<\/p>\n<p>The plan also prioritises carbon-capture technologies to supply CO\u2082 needed for producing synthetic fuels, further strengthening the port\u2019s alternative-fuel ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Annual output of up to 100,000 tonnes of sustainable fuels, including biomethane, is forecast, helping integrate Barcelona into maritime green corridors.<\/p>\n<p>Shore power and electrifucation remains part of the roadmap.
