{"id":6117,"date":"2026-02-17T13:08:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T13:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2026\/02\/17\/zepa-drives-port-electrification-forward\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:21:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:21:06","slug":"zepa-drives-port-electrification-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/energy-technology-greenport\/zepa-drives-port-electrification-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"ZEPA drives port electrification forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zepalliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZEPA<\/a> has published updated Voluntary Standards, a step-by-step transition plan and an online load profile scenario tool designed to accelerate adoption of battery-electric container handling equipment (BE-CHE).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectrification is a massive step for the port industry,\u201d said Jesse Makkonen, head of marine and ports at Kempower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZEPA has helped bring these stakeholders together and is building tools and strategies to accelerate port electrification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Removing barriers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The alliance\u2019s work extends beyond technical documentation, helping align terminal operators, OEMs and technology providers to make the business case for electrification viable.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>ZEPA\u2019s standards aim to remove technical, commercial and operational barriers to electrifying cargo handling while supporting coordinated action across the port value chain.<\/p>\n<p>The updated Voluntary Standards are intended to reduce fragmentation in charging and battery design, improving interoperability and affordability for battery-electric cargo handling.<\/p>\n<p>ZEPA\u2019s revised total cost of ownership analysis indicates that BE-CHE is becoming cost-competitive within one to five years, depending on region and equipment type, with terminal tractors already nearing parity with diesel alternatives in some markets.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, ZEPA\u2019s Load Profile Explorer tool demonstrates how charging strategies can shift peak electricity demand by tens of megawatts, helping terminals manage grid constraints and avoid costly upgrades.
