{"id":6300,"date":"2026-04-27T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T12:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2026\/04\/27\/watch-ports-test-drop-in-biofuel-solution\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:22:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:22:17","slug":"watch-ports-test-drop-in-biofuel-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/watch-ports-test-drop-in-biofuel-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Ports test drop-in biofuel solution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vast Infraestrutura, Wilson Sons and Ferroport executed the first refuelling with Be8 BeVant on the tug at&nbsp;Ferroport\u2019s iron ore facility aiming to decarbonise operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project has the potential to reduce indirect emissions for the port as a whole, also contributing to the reduction of Anglo American\u2019s indirect emissions by decreasing Wilson Sons\u2019 direct emissions,\u201d said&nbsp;Edenilson Sanches, sustainability manager at Ferroport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt represents a joint effort by the entire port community to implement operations that are more energy-efficient and have lower carbon intensity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drop-in fuel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The trial used a drop-in biodiesel developed by Be8 that can be deployed without engine modification, enabling immediate application across existing fleets.<\/p>\n<p>This fuel, produced from soybean oil, animal fat and used cooking oil, offers up to a 99% reduction in CO\u2082 emissions compared with marine diesel.<\/p>\n<p>During the testing phase, telemetry data from the tug WS Rosalvo will be used to assess performance, durability and emissions, supporting a final report for international certification.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative forms part of Vast\u2019s wider decarbonisation strategy to scale marine biofuels adoption across port vessels and reduce port emissions.<\/p>\n<p>It builds on earlier trials using HVO renewable diesel in Wilson Sons\u2019 tugboats operating at Porto do A\u00e7u as a substitute for marine diesel.
