It led us into unexplored territory, where we often found ourselves among the first to tackle challenges that had no clear solutions,” said Algis Latakas, director general of Klaipėda Port Authority.

”The journey was demanding, but it gave us invaluable experience. Today, we are proud to open Lithuania’s first green hydrogen facility and contribute to a new chapter in the country’s energy transition. Klaipėda Port has always connected sea and land routes; now it is also becoming a gateway to future energy solutions.”

A new chapter

Development of the hydrogen facility began in 2023, with construction starting in summer 2025 and testing taking place in February 2026.

The station uses a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser and is expected to produce around 127 tonnes of hydrogen annually at full capacity.

Approximately one quarter of the hydrogen output will support Klaipėda Port Authority’s own operations. A hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel is due to enter service at the port, while a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai has already joined the Authority’s vehicle fleet.

Designed as open port infrastructure, the facility will also support the wider logistics and transport sector. Klaipėda Port Authority is working with LTG Group, Klaipėda Stevedoring Company BEGA and Volvo Lietuva to explore hydrogen applications in freight transport, rail operations and other port activities.

The project was implemented under the Next Generation Lithuania Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan and funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme. Total investment in the hydrogen production and refuelling station is estimated at €12 million, including approximately €6 million in EU funding.

Commercial hydrogen supply is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

Klaipėda Port has opened Lithuania’s first green hydrogen production and refuelling station, supporting the development of low emission transport and sustainable port infrastructure.

[7,34
40,36,1944

post-6392","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alternative-fuels-greenport","category-europe-greenport","tag-alternative-fuels","tag-green-hydrogen","tag-klaipeda-port
["GET
