{"id":6684,"date":"2008-05-28T21:26:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-28T20:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2008\/05\/28\/dangerous-cargo-sidebar-2\/"},"modified":"2008-05-28T21:26:00","modified_gmt":"2008-05-28T20:26:00","slug":"dangerous-cargo-sidebar-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/container-cargo-handling\/dangerous-cargo-sidebar-2\/","title":{"rendered":"dangerous cargo: sidebar 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Kenya Ports Authority is being urged to scrap &#8216;dangerous cargo&#8217; charges on fertiliser, which add 10% to its handling charges of up to $165 per tonne.<\/p>\n<p>John-Baptiste Gasangwa, a representative of the Rwandan business community that import goods through Mombasa, said fertiliser was one of the most important commodities in agriculture on which his country&#8217;s economy depended, and he couldn&#8217;t see why it should be subjected to unnecessary costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a crucial commodity, fertiliser should be handled with sensitivity and any decisions that have implication on its costs should be well considered before implementation,&#8221; he said after the Mombasa Port effected the new shipping tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Port harbour master and operations manager Captain Khamisi Twalib is defending the decision to levy the charges. &#8220;We are an international port and we are following the global trend; it is not a unique thing with Mombasa port,&#8221; he is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>However, what the importers get in return for their &#8216;hazardous cargo&#8217; surcharge isn&#8217;t clear.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When is a hazard not a hazard?
