The move will free up the old harbour sites for redevelopment and giving the new handling facilities more space and more suitable road connections – avoiding the heavy road traffic in the city centre.

Vuosaari aims to be one of the most modern ports in the Baltic Sea when completed in 2009: the new 225 hectare harbour complex will be able to handle over 10m tonnes of cargo per year with ro-ro cargo and containers taking a 60/40% share respectively. By this time, traffic channels will be ready, along with most of the business park.

The harbour has direct connections to the entire Finnish main road and railway network – and claims the most frequent shipping service between Finland and northern Central European ports. The port authorities say that automatic traffic and access control have been put in place for a smooth flow of goods from ships to land transport and vice versa, keeping cargo moving 24 hours a day – resulting in short stay times of just a few minutes.

Despite its teething problems on opening, the Helsinki port of Vuosaari finally got into its stride last week.

[15
["post-7329","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe
["GET
