The hope is that the new terminal will act as a major gateway for trade between the Southern US and Asia and also between the US and fast-growing Latin American markets.<\/p>\n<p>The initial phase, which will open in January 2006, forecasts exporting 8m tons of minerals annually. The second phase, which is due for completion in January 2007, will raise capacity to 30m tons. The existing terminal concentrates purely on imported coal, handling around 9m tons a year.
