DB IS has recently opened a new depot at Nuremburg harbour.

The company saw an increasing demand for container storage and repair at the beginning of 2009 – the result, he says, of the cancellation of container investments. However, by the end of the year business was back to a more normal situation, albeit at a 15% lower level.

“The crisis itself has nothing to do with the need of container depot activities. Even if a container repair in the Far East only costs 10% of the European inland price, it would not make sense to send containers to the Far East for repair, when they are needed in Europe,” he says.

For Pentalver in the UK, there have been ups and downs thanks to the economic situation and, more recently, the weather.

“Volumes dropped last year; there has not been so much pressure on the vessels so they have loaded empties back out again. But when we do get bad weather, the first thin the lines drop in order to maintain schedule is empties,” says Chris Lawrenson.

DB Schenker Intermodal Services, which operates container depots at ten locations in Germany and as well as four intermodal terminals, has invested heavily in the past two years to increase capacity.

[62
["post-7863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-equipment
["GET
