The operator was keen to get hold of the concession. Gulftainer told Port Strategy<\/i> that an increase in export volume from the Middle East has resulted in additional full volumes through its facilities, requiring terminal layouts to be reviewed and revised.<\/p>\n
Peter Richards, managing director, Gulftainer, said to PS<\/i>: \u201cA key benefit for the company from the new container terminal will be to link the existing Iraq network with the Mediterranean.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201c(Our) experience and network will be instrumental to help Tripoli secure new business. Customers of Gulftainer have hinted that they would \u2018follow\u2019 Gulftainer if the service provided were superior to other surrounding terminals.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Gulftainer\u2019s strategy is not only about leveraging existing relationships with key shipping lines \u2013 it also about attracting shipping lines calling at East Mediterranean ports over to the new terminal.<\/p>\n
Gulftainer plans to invest up to USD$75m intially in the terminal which will include new ship to shore gantry cranes, RTG cranes, reachstackers and other support equipment.<\/p>\n
The facility will be used for both transhipment and local trades and is intended to become a hub for import export business for Lebanon with Europe\/Far East routes, trade regionally in the Mediterranean, potentially some Europe\/China routes, and transit cargo to Iraq.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
