Above all, it will allow our customers to bring even larger ships to TCP and thereby reduce their unit costs. This will bring benefits to both the carriers and the Brazilian exporters and importers.”

TCP has gone through a remarkable transformation since the facility was acquired by Advent International, a US based private equity firm in 2011. This indicates just how much of a difference private investment can really make to the sector.

Its gone from being one of the worst performing container terminals in Brazil, with an average berth productivity of less than 30 container moves per hour in 2010, TCP now regularly exceeds 100 moves per hour placing the port’s productivity on par with ports in North America and Europe.

TCP says that within 18 months, TCP has eliminated waiting time to berth and more than doubled the berth productivity by a combination of changing the culture and investing in new equipment. It says that what used to be a port call requiring some 48 hours is now being reliably and consistently completed within 18 hours.

A 315m extension of the terminal is under construction and scheduled to be completed by November 2013 expanding TCP’s berth capacity to more than 1.5m teu.

Terminal de Contêineres de Paranaguá (TCP) is helping to set new standards for container ports in South America by putting paid to the reputation that all Brazilian ports are expensive and slow.

[62,63
["post-8701","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-equipment","category-products-services
["GET
