{"id":8865,"date":"2013-06-26T15:32:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2013\/06\/26\/automation-highlights-trucker-safety-issues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:46:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:46:23","slug":"automation-highlights-trucker-safety-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/equipment\/automation-highlights-trucker-safety-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Automation highlights trucker safety issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a considerable reduction in accidents at automated yards, TT Club global risk assessment director Laurence Jones told delegates \u201cwe are still killing far too many external truck drivers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The debate centred on whether the driver is safest in his\/her cab while the loading or unloading operation takes place, or whether he\/she should exit the cab to wait in a designated safe area.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on experiences at his terminals, Ports America chief engineer Tom Ward raised the point that regardless of procedures and practices, truck drivers are not employed by the port and often have differing views of safe working practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safest bet is to assume that the worker is a suicidal idiot,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can define a procedure to keep a human being safe, but we must assume that the human being will not follow that procedure.
