{"id":895,"date":"2020-01-31T12:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T12:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2020\/01\/31\/australian-rail-solution-combats-congestion\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:47:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:47:38","slug":"australian-rail-solution-combats-congestion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/australasia-greenport\/australian-rail-solution-combats-congestion\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian rail solution combats congestion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ALC said the Victorian Government\u2019s support of the AUS$125m Port Rail Transformation Project (PRTP) developed by the Port of Melbourne is a welcome recognition of industry\u2019s efforts to reduce road congestion around major port precincts and improve the efficiency of supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PRTP will help to alleviate road congestion around the Port of Melbourne, which is critical for logistics companies moving freight into and out of the port, and also for improving the liveability of residential communities near the port,\u201d said ALC CEO Kirk Coningham.<\/p>\n<p>The port\u2019s rail solution at Swanson Dock East will be developed over the next three years and will see more containers moved by rail more efficiently, by-passing roads in inner Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Port of Melbourne CEO, Brendan Bourke said today \u201cThe port\u2019s rail solution is a critical and missing link in Melbourne\u2019s transport and supply chain network. It expands the rail offering for freight and delivers environmental benefits by reducing truck movements, congestion and pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Port rail shuttle trains will have a capacity of 84 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) containers, in comparison to a B-Double truck having a capacity of three TEU.
