The project, ‘Promoting Chemical Safety Management in the African Region’, has been funded by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) for two years. The project is part of a voluntary initiative, which promotes responsible care for the chemical industry, and looks to constantly improve the sector’s environmental, health and safety issues. Other companies involved in this project include the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and BASF.<\/p>\n
The issue with chemical handling is the potential risk of accidents, such as leakage or fire. These possible accidents will be the result of a weak link in the transportation chain, whether it’s inappropriate shipment or storage.<\/p>\n
In order to combat this potential risk, the project is helping to raise awareness through a number of initiatives. ICCA and UNEP, with help from authorities and logistics, will practice on site, teaching the right methods of handling chemicals and emergency protocols.<\/p>\n
A workshop took place in November 2013 at the port of Mombasa, Kenya. The workshops are spotlighting the need for the right level of skills and emergency systems in order to allow for safe, risk-free chemical handling. Teaching materials have been used in the workshops and can also be found on the internet.<\/p>\n
Another useful tool has been Hazard Mapping, which gathers available statistics from African authorities with respect to important traffic routes for transporting chemicals. This information can assess possible accident areas, which can then lead to guidance for future transport \u2013 the project will seek to halt any accidents on main transport routes, such as those close to water reservoirs or local communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
