The firm\u2019s North Europe Global Port Tracker is projecting North European imports for 2015 of just under 1% at – 0.8%, down from 0.4% growth last month. Exports are also down to -1.7% for the year, versus 0.2% last month.<\/p>\n
Ben Hackett of Hackett Associates said: \u201cDespite the improvement in some of the basic econometric data, trade demand does not reflect the same growth. We are seeing weak consumer demand and a consequent impact on the carriers who persist in continuing to provide far too much capacity resulting in exceptionally low freight rates. 2015 could be as bad for carriers as 2009 was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking at the impact on North European ports, Dr Maatsch, Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), added: \u201cThe Maasvlakte II terminal openings have had an impact on the competitive landscape. Since all terminals have been financed in part by liner operators, the major players have their stakes there and will be striving to assure a fair utilisation of the facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tracker data does show that Rotterdam has indeed increased its market share to above 3%, but so far the development has been steady. Of all ports, it was neighbouring Antwerp which saw the largest market share increase during the past quarters from 21.4% in the third quarter of 2014 to 23.0% in the first quarter of 2015, despite earlier fears of market share losses.<\/p>\n
The North Europe Global Port Tracker published by Hackett Associates and the ISL provides a six-month projection plus an additional two quarter forecast of inbound and outbound container movements for Le Havre, Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremen\/Bremerhaven and Hamburg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
