Due to significant growth in the South Wales region we are currently recruiting for a number of Port Operatives to join the team at our Port of Newport.

ABP is the UK’s leading port operator with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. Our five South Wales ports cover an area of 3,800 acres and contribute £1.4 billion to the UK economy. We handle a diverse range of cargos from steel and timber, to animal feed and fertiliser. Along with our customers, we support close to 15,000 jobs across Wales.

We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible individuals with a “can do” attitude, to join our team, working outdoors, on a rotating day shift pattern, in a dynamic and interesting environment. The Port Operative role involves the discharge and loading of ships, lorries and trains using a variety of plant and equipment including cranes, forklift trucks and shovel loaders.

Previous experience of working in a ports environment is not necessary and we welcome applications from people from a range of backgrounds including warehousing, logistics and construction. Experience of operating heavy plant (including loading shovel, 360 excavator or tug-master) or fork lift trucks is desirable, although not essential. ABP has a training academy to help you develop new skills and progress your career.

We offer a salary of £20,000 to £25,000 (dependent on skills and experience) plus shift allowance and a great range of benefits including an excellent pension, annual bonus, private healthcare and ongoing training and development.

Main duties

  • Operate heavy plant and machinery to achieve the safe and efficient handling of cargo. Plant to include loading shovel, 360 excavators, tug-master, heavy fork lift truck and materials handler.
  • To undergo training to operate new and additional plant and equipment as required to meet customer and operational requirements. This will include the operation of quayside and mobile harbour cranes.
  • To engage in the safe movement of cargo in storage areas, warehouses and on vessels.
  • Comply with and assist in the development of Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work and ensure that all duties are undertaken in accordance with ABP's safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide assistance in the operation of the weighbridge and record and compile other administrative information associated with cargo movement as required.
  • To undertake cleaning tasks and general maintenance duties associated with the efficient operation of the port. 
    Undertake duties to aid compliance with licences for cargo handling.

Skills and Experience

Previous experience and knowledge of warehousing, construction or logistics is desirable 

  • Experience of operating, or willing to learn how to operate, heavy plant and machinery including but not limited to; Loading shovel, 360 excavator or tug-master or have the willingness to be trained.
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
