Here's a round-up of the latest products and services on the market all aimed at saving terminal operators time and money by improving operations.

Ship-to-shore cranes

La Spezia Container Terminal - LSCT (Contship Italia Group) and MGM-OMG (Officine Meccaniche Galileo) have signed a contract for the purchase of two new ship-to-shore cranes.

The cranes are part of the investment plan to improve the infrastructure and capacity of the terminal. They new cranes will be able to operate across 23 rows of ultra large container carriers enabling LSCT to service the latest generation vessels and improving operational capability.

They’re being manufactured in Qingdao by China Shipbuilding Trading Co Ltd and Haixi Heavy-Duty Machinery Co ltd and will be delivered in 18 months.

Scanners and identifiers

Smiths Detection is launching three new security solutions for operators. The HCVM e35 is a compact mobile vehicle X-ray scanner for small spaces, the HCVL is a fast and efficient lightweight vehicle scanner for high density traffic areas and the ACE-ID handheld identifier os for non-contact analysis of explosives, narcotics and toxic chemicals.

Auto start-stop for lift trucks

Konecranes Lift Trucks has come up with another clever way to save fuel and lower emissions which it says is “probably another first for heavy-duty lift trucks."

The auto start-stop feature turns off the lift truck engine and applies the parking brake automatically whenever it idles for a period of time. The engine can then be restarted at any time just by pressing the brake or drive pedal.

Konecranes says that this new function significantly reduces fuel consumption by 5 to 15% along with CO2 emissions. It also reduces noise levels and extends engine service intervals based on reducing running hours.

New LED floodlight technology

Phoenix Products Company has launched its latest innovation in LED floodlight technology – the SturdiLED™ Series.

The company says that this latest product provides a multitude of benefits for terminal operators including significant maintenance reduction, energy savings, and instant-on lighting to reduce downtime at terminals.
