Igoumenitsa Port is one of Greece’s most important transport hubs, located at the junction of the Egnatia and Ionian Motorways.
With Phases A and B completed and Phase C underway—including a 610 m Southern Quay and a 198 m Annular Dock—the Grimaldi Group, pioneers of Motorways of the Sea, has invested in its strategic expansion.
Working in close collaboration with AKTOR, we delivered a combination of fender types consisting of 26 Cone Fender Systems (SPC 800, G2.8) with closed-box fender panels (2050×2750 mm), 21 Arch Fenders (V-P 1000×1000 mm, G2.8), 10 Arch Fenders (V 600×1000 mm, G2.5) and 4 Corner Arch Fenders (500 × 1250/1250 mm).
Fender System Design for Vessel-Specific Needs
As the terminal accommodates both Ro-Ro vessels and ferries, Cone Fender Systems and Arch Fenders were customized to match the distinct berthing characteristics of each vessel type. The selected models were specifically adapted to ensure optimal performance and adaptability, providing a reliable solution for mixed-traffic operations.
For instance, to meet the specific demands of Ro-Ro vessels, the steel panels were designed with large chamfers to prevent hull beltings from getting caught beneath the panel edges—minimizing the risk of damage. In addition, shear chains were incorporated to effectively absorb horizontal forces generated during berthing, further enhancing durability under heavy-duty conditions.
The Igoumenitsa expansion reflects ShibataFenderTeam’s capacity to deliver a wide range of solutions. By carefully addressing the requirements of each vessel type, we enable ports to safely accommodate various marine traffic—transforming infrastructure into versatile, multipurpose terminals prepared for future challenges.
