Peter May
Peter has more than 25 years of experience in the environmental sector working in municipal, state, and federal government agencies, NGO’s and now the private and academic sectors. He has a background in urban ecology, tidal marsh restoration and urban estuarine, stream and big river systems. Dr. May has applied his experience to numerous urban tidewater projects in Maryland and the District of Columbia and for 12 years as a Senior Environmental Scientist with the ecological engineering firm Biohabitats in Baltimore he has worked to implement novel ecotechnologies in New York City, Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay area. Peter received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Marine, Estuarine, Environmental Science in 2007 where he has also been a regular faculty lecturer since 2012 in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology. Dr. May has been working with algae based water treatment technologies for 25 years since his exposure at the Smithsonian Institution’s Marine Systems Lab and has facilitated the conversion of algae to biofuels such as ethanol, butanol, pyrolysis bio oil and syngas and most recently with the Port of Baltimore to methane to power an emission free fuel cell. Peter is currently developing a zero discharge urban aquaponics shrimp farm in Baltimore and enjoys sailing Chesapeake Bay and watching algae grow.
