ABB’s Bryfors: flexible automation is key

Speaking exclusively to Port Strategy, Uno Bryfors claimed that today, automation can be applied to nearly any terminal across the world, from the smallest to the largest currently in operation.

In a video interview, Mr Bryfors also discussed the “transformation of terminals in the mega age”, noting that the market is currently experiencing a gradual deployment of automation.

“It can be step-by-step deployment of automatic stacking cranes, both cantilever type and end-load type, it can be starting from automation of intermodal cranes or it can be remote operation of [ship-to-shore cranes],” he explained.

Mr Bryfors added that automation and remote operation allows “multi-skilled centralised teams” to be formed, allowing operations 24 hours a day without the need for breaks.

“This also enables very efficient exception handling in terminals as it’s a team approach and we don’t overload a single person.”
