Operations resume at APM Terminals Barcelona

Operations were re-established at APM Terminals Barcelona on Thursday 1 November, with at least one vessel operating following a fire caused by a ferry strike on a crane.

An investigation has been opened by a Comission of Maritime Accidents (Ministerio de Fomento, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructures) following the fire at the Muelle Sur Container Terminal, on the South Wharf of the Port of Barcelona on Wednesday 31 October, when the GNV Excellent ferry struck a crane which collapsed onto several containers of the terminal, setting them alight.

Operations were stopped and workers evacuated following the incident.

No official announcements have been made about the cause of the incident, however, strong winds were present at the port at the time of time the ferry struck the crane.

Muelle Sur Container Terminal, operated by APM Terminals since January 2016, has an annual throughput capacity of 2.3m teus.
