Green port kudos at the UK Maritime Awards

Dee Cathari MBE, Port of Tyne was named as the winner in both the Maritime UK 2020 Clean Energy Operator and Clean Energy Enabler categories. Meanwhile, the Port of Cromarty Firth is celebrating after being named Business of the Year and Coastal Powerhouse.

The awards recognise the ports movement towards zero emissions and decarbonisation and for the work it is doing in bringing different organisations together to support a wider net zero future.

Over the past 12 months, Port of Tyne’s Net Zero strategy has seen diesel consumption cut by 260K litres, saved 2.3M kWh in energy and eliminated over 1,500 tonnes of CO2.

The port also launched the Tyne Clean Energy Park, which has already welcomed its first tenant Equinor, which will operate and maintain what will be the biggest windfarm in the world from the port.

Cromarty Firth meanwhile is leading an initiative called Opportunity Cromarty Firth, aimed at creating a post-Brexit Free Trade Zone.

The project aims to realise the full potential of the multi-billion pound offshore wind projects to be constructed off its shores.

Chief Executive Bob Buskie, said: “To be named Coastal Powerhouse, ahead of PD Ports and Solent LEP who have both made significant positive impacts within their respective coastal communities, is an amazing achievement.”
