Safety investment pays off

An €80 million investment in improving safety practices, equipment and software has seen the risk of injury drop by 40% at DP World’s European terminals.

The company reports it has made ‘huge progress’ in safety and accident prevention in the past year thanks to significant investments in smart solutions such as a route mobile app for truckers and remote surveyor technology.

“With 20 terminals in 12 countries across the breadth of Europe, and 8,000 staff to care for, we have been guided by our first ever Environmental, Social and Governance Risk annual report, a North Star for our efforts to become a beneficial and safe logistics operator,” said Enoma Woghiren, regional head of HSSE for DP World Europe.

“Our activities across the continent are creating a safety benchmark for us as an organisation and our industry peers in Europe and beyond.”

Innovations include a €2 million straddle-carrier platform and refuelling station at DP World Antwerp in Belgium which enables drivers to access their vehicles safely and provides a shielded zone for fuelling, cleaning and inflating tyres.

The straddle-carrier platform is part of a wider €200 million investment in Antwerp which also includes DP World’s recently launched Route 1700 mobile app, which gives truck drivers the option to complete pre-shift administrative processes before entering the port vicinity, helping keep them safe from moving vehicles.

At DP World Yarimca in Turkey, recently adopted Digital Surveyor technology is allowing users to view vessel maintenance remotely, reducing the number of people on-site and consequent risk of accident.

In the Netherlands, Rotterdam World Gateway has invested in more sustainable electric vehicles, building an on-site battery pool where aging or damaged batteries can be safely stored whilst waiting repair or disposal.
