Riga projects

Traditionally, 70% of Riga’s total throughput has been Russian-related traffic. Total investment by private companies at the port reached ¢147m ($187m) last year. Figures are not available for 2008 but apart from private terminal developments, several large-scale infrastructure projects are being planned at the Port of Riga.

The main access channel is set to be deepened in the next few years, and there are ongoing deepening works going on in several areas of the port.

Land reclamation is under way for a new multipurpose container and ro-ro terminal on Kundzinsala island – this facility will have capacity of 850,000 teu and 550,000 ro-ro units per year.

Agreements have been signed with the Latvian Railway Company to develop the rail network to Kundzinsala, and also to Krievu sala island.

The port authority wants to relocate some activities from the city centre to a planned multifunctional dry bulk and general cargo complex on Krievu sala; a feasibility study is near completion and land reclamation has begun.

Meanwhile, plans to rebuild the Eastern and Western piers are at the technical design stage, and a feasibility study into the development of a new ro-pax terminal in the city centre is being finalised.
