Emissions focus

The reduction of emissions is a key driver in designing new heavy dutyand empty container handling forklifts, says Ray Zuschlag of HysterCompany.

“At Hyster we are just at the concluding end of completely refreshing our full range of heavy forklifts and container handling equipment,” he says. “That means everything from our 17,000 lb capacity forklifts to our empty container handlers, and up to our 115,000 lb capacity loaded container handlers and reach stackers. The entire Hyster Big Truck product line is updated with improved performance, reliability and reduced emissions. “One of the reasons for this update has been emissions and we are now fully Tier 3 compliant for EPA regulations. In the port environment in North America, emissions are a major issue and the “green ports” initiative is a major driver.

“The volume of container traffic is on an upwards spiral of 8% to 10% a year and just as cold ironing is the big issue for the containerships, so ports are doing everything they can to reduce emissions of the equipment operating on the terminals.”

“Our concept is a global design tailored for regional requirements,” says Mr Zuschlag, who is Product Manager, Big Trucks for Hyster Company. “Hyster products are sold worldwide and supported by a global network of Hyster dealers.”
