Caledonian Canal
It is hoped a recent trial along the Caledonian Canal will open up a new freight logistics gateway for the Scottish Highlands. The trial was undertaken by the ships owner in conjunction with the Scottish Executive and British Waterways (Scotland) and demonstrated in a that with technical modifications commercial ship traffic could become a regular feature on the Caledonian Canal, also servicing local ports and communities.
RMS will now have operations in five ports on the Humber and will be able to provide services to clients through handling larger ships with cargoes of up to 30,000 tonnes.
The trial was undertaken in response to the Scottish Executive’s 2005 policy measures on sustainable transport, environmental protection and community enhancement, with a target commitment to remove over two million lorry miles in a specified time scale. The objective is to seek greater use of alternative transport modes, such as rail and water freight.
