Rotterdam
Rotterdam handled 369m tons of cargo in 2005 and Antwerp handled 160m. This represented 5% growth for both ports.
Rotterdam’s container movements jumped by more than 12% to 9.3m TEUs whilst Antwerp registered 6.5m TEUs up nearly 7% on the previous year.
Antwerp’s Deurganck Dock container terminal (right) was officially opened in July whilst Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte 2 (above) is currently going through the discussion phase of the tendering process involving the contracting consortia discussing design and build criteria.
Three consortia of dredging and construction companies have qualified for the building of Maasvlakte: Royal Boskalis Westminster with Van Oord, Dredging International with Jan de Nul and Ballast Nedam with Per Aarsleff.
