Any decision would have to be made by technicians from the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq); the case was referred to Antaq in May this year.

The president nevertheless observed that existing infrastructure is operating at saturation levels and desperately requires modernisation.

Since 1995, box throughput has risen from 60,000 teu to 230,000 teu, a figure not expected to be reached for at least 25 years.

With the expansion of the terminal, throughput is expected to reach 700,000 teu by 2020.

However, this will require harbour dredging and improved terrestrial access.
