Lack of communication compounds Paita problems

Problems surrounding the startup of the Perus Paita port concession stem from a lack of communication, the foreign trade and tourism (Mincetur) minister Martí n Pé rez has said.

Port Strategy: confused signals from Peru port

Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos (TPE) officially took over the administration of Paita on October 7, after which it launched a new tariff structure.

Shippers saw the new structure as a tariff increase and raised their prices in response – thereby provoking an outcry from exporters and other industry players directly affected by the rise in costs.

“The shipping lines and service operators at the port were confused,” Mr Pérez said. “However, we have met with TPE more than once and the situation has been resolved. The whole cycle is now cheaper because the port has just one operator.”
