Privatisation protests at Salaverry
Local residents and port workers at the Peruvian Port of Salaverry have protested against the proposed privatisation of the installation.
While most are not against private sector investment, they oppose the way in which the government intends to implement it.
They believe that a ‘Paita-esque’ situation is inevitable, where a hike in rates resulted in an exodus of traffic.
Price hikes in the region of $200 at the Peruvian Port of Paita prompted some users to switch cargo to alternatives such as Salaverry or Callao, and even to ports in neighbouring Ecuador.
Users have stated that new concessionaire Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos (TPE) should not be allowed to raise prices until it has invested in improvements.
