SAIC supports Integrated Container Inspection System (ICIS)
The global supply chain is at risk of hijacking by terrorists with the intent to deliver and detonate weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), says US security provider SAIC. Stakeholders in the marine transportation system are working to mitigate this threat. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is pushing the shipping industry to increase security in container-handling operations all along the supply chain, from origin to destination. While current CBP programs like the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), the Container Security Initiative (CSI) and the Smart Container effort have improved end-to-end security, the global supply chain remains at risk.

To support this effort, SAIC is developing the Integrated Container Inspection System (ICIS) that can quickly scan closed, moving containers for radiation sources and potential WMDs and provide integrated scanning data to enable Customs authorities to identify high-risk containers.
Combining SAIC’s gamma ray imaging, radiation scanning and OCR technologies, ICIS will enable container-handling facilities to scan containers as part of their normal operations without impeding traffic – and actually expediting traffic in some cases.
