Short sea project in California gains $30 million in TIGER grants

Short sea shipping, albeit of the container on barge variety, along designated Marine Highways, got a glimmer of good news. A trio of ports in Northern California has been awarded $30 million, under the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. In project expected to cost $69.3 million overall, truck freight from West Sacramento and Stockton will be diverted onto barge service, linked to Oakland. Some $1.5 billion overall, across all transport modes, was awarded under the TIGER program, part of the broader economic stimulus efforts.
