FastNet promises to double crane productivity
APM Terminals has unveiled a new ship-to-shore crane concept designed to work adjacent bays of a large container ship.
Known as FastNet, the design uses intermediate frames to support large horizontal girders raised 50 meters above the quay level. The FastNet STS cranes are then suspended from the girders.
While the upper portion of the cranes is similar to existing designs, it’s the removal of the large portal frame below that delivers operational flexibility, according to APMT.
“The operational flexibility is obtained by allowing the cranes to pass the frames using a gate in the boom structure and enabling the frames to move parallel to the quay to avoid blocking ship bays,” said APMT.
Currently when loading and unloading vessels in port, crane legs dictate a minimum spacing of one bay, which restricts productivity.
