PIANC studies berthing speed
A PIANC working group is preparing a report on actual berthing speeds and the direction of approaching vessels under various environmental conditions.
The report, which will be used for improving the design of fendering systems, is being put together in co-operation with the IAPH to obtain data contributions from ports and terminals worldwide.
This information will be treated confidentially and non-geographically, however, quantitative data will mainly be coming from larger vessels where information is more readily obtained. Other data will be sought from OCIMF, SIGGTO, fender manufacturers, producers of portable piloting units and other electronic berthing aids.
Present information sources for berthing speeds used by designers date back decades and do not encompass the very large ships operating today. The report will be processed and tabulated into a range of vessel types, environmental conditions, tug assisted or unassisted approaches and the exposure of the berth. This work will be an invaluable addition to the previous PIANC “Guidelines for the Design of Fender Systems” published in 2002 which is now adopted by port, terminal and fender designers worldwide.
