Drive-in on the Bosporus
Yilport Container Terminal (part of the Yildirim Group) is to convert 18 diesel-powered Rubber Tired Gantry cranes (RTGs) to electrical operation.
The terminal, located at Gebze-Dilovasi near Istanbul, will use E-RTG technology developed by Conductix-Wampfler (CW) to accomplish the change over.
Diesel-driven RTGs often account for a solid half of the power consumed in a port, and are thus responsible for a significant part of its CO2 emissions.
CW is applying a drive-in system for the conversion. This permits cranes to change lanes without manual plugging and unplugging. After each block change, the crane and conductor rail connect automatically.
A total of 18 cranes will be rebuilt, with more than 6km of conductor rails being installed for the power supply across 11 lanes. The conductor rails have four parallel poles and over 1,000A capacity.
