Ditch the generator for greater savings

Liebherrs Pactronic hybrid drive system – first showcased on its LHM 550 – is a boon for mobile harbour cranes because it allows for increased handling performance and a simultaneous reduction in fuel consumption.

The system is characterised by a hydraulic accumulator which supplements the fluid pump in delivering power to the system. This means that the system can boost power and efficiency considerably, with increased hoisting and lowering speeds.

At the same time, fuel consumption is reduced by utilising the reverse energy and surplus power within the system. This is especially important when discussing the environmental aspects of mobile harbour cranes, since it could be argued that the use of diesel generators is a problem.

As ICTSI’s Brian Oakley says: “In most of ICTSI’s mobile harbour crane operations, the cranes tend to be operated from their own diesel generators to yield superior flexibility. Under these circumstances, MHC’s are definitely less environmentally-friendly.”

But while the Pactronic hybrid drive system is more environmentally-friendly, it is also useful for incidents that require peak power, like for example, bulk handling. It is also essential for reduction in sustainable carbon emissions, with a decrease in 30%. And another key factor is that it allows for a notably quieter performance – something to take into consideration by users who operate cranes near residential areas.
