Call to tackle US harbour tax misuse
America’s use of its federal Harbour Maintenance Tax came under fire as House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman John Mica spoke out against its misappropriation.
In a guest editorial on Politico.com, he said that “…despite growing maritime infrastructure needs… funds are not being used for their intended purpose of maintaining our ports.”
Chairman Mica further called on his congressional colleagues to craft legislation that can help “reduce the massive federal bureaucracy, streamline project delivery and provide flexibility to states so they can address their infrastructure needs”.
This stance follows the line taken by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) which also urged the committee to address the Harbour Maintenance Tax problem and fully use the proceeds for maintaining the nation’s ports and harbours at their authorised – and required – navigation.
