US Northwest ports lose out to Canada
Ports in the US Pacific North West say that the mandatory Harbour Maintenance Tax that they have to pay for dredging is forcing grain shipments towards cheaper ports in Canada.
Both Seattle and Tacoma, which have natural deep harbours, believe they are losing out, because much of the tax is allocated to ports on the US East and Gulf coasts, where maintenance dredging is a necessity.
