Fender choices driven by price
Price-driven fender purchases could “increase costs and reduce the efficiency of ports over the longer-term”, according to research from Trelleborg Marine Systems.
A survey commissioned by the mooring systems specialist found that a quarter of those responsible for the procurement of berthing and docking products were solely concerned with price and did not care where the product came from.
Additionally, three quarters of respondents expressed a desire for more stringent standards. PIANC’s 2002 “Guidelines for the design of fender systems” – designed to maintain standards – was singled out as respondents raised concerns that the guidelines were not being met by some traders.
Trelleborg said it hopes to use the report as a debating platform to lobby for higher industry standards.
