Oakland overcomes strike chaos

Occupy Oakland organised yesterday’s march on the port in order to ‘shut it down’ before the 7pm night shift. The march was organised to blockade the flow of capital and show commitment to longshore workers, as part of wider general strikes.

The port confirmed last night that maritime operations would not fully resume until it’s safe to do so and that steps were taken yesterday afternoon to ensure harbour workers got home safely before the start of the march.

Although operations have now partially resumed, the situation remains fluid.

In a statement the port said: “Based upon the most current information we have from the field, we can report of, as of now, in the port area, there have been no injuries, no property damage, and no major security problems”.

The hope is that normal shifts can resume today – continued missed shifts are not good for the port, employees, or the region.
