Shutdown threat hangs over US west coast

Following the Wall Street protests last week, demonstrators have threatened to block all west coast seaports on 12 December as part of ongoing national demonstrations.

The Port of LA says it’s prepared to deal with possible blockades

According to the Occupy Los Angeles movement, the group has plans in place to march on the Port of Los Angeles on the day and shut down SSA terminals, owned by Goldman Sachs.

Phillip Sanfield, spokesman at Port of Los Angeles, said to Port Strategy: “The Port of Los Angeles is monitoring the possibility of marches and/or demonstrators at West Coast seaports. Los Angeles Port Police are in close contact with other local and regional law enforcement agencies and monitoring developments.”

The Occupy movement says that all blocks are in aid of the ongoing struggle against the EGT – an international grain exporter constituted of bankers whose practices have “ruined the lives of the working class all over the world”.

During the general strike at the beginning of the month, PS reported that demonstrators marched on the Port Of Oakland as a warning to EGT– which the Occupy movement says has been ignored.

However, demonstrators may be in for a frosty reception from port workers though because continuous disruptions may mean workers struggling to find a shift and fearing job loss.
