UK examines investment opportunities

British government agency UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) has published its most extensive assessment of market potential in the Asian ports sector to date.

UKTI is exploring port investment and supply chain opportunities for British companies

The aim behind the UKTI report, Port Projects in Asia and the Asia Pacific Regions, is to explore potential for UK companies for investment and supply chain opportunities in the ports sector.

Jason Castelino, head of the ports sector team at UKTI, said to Port Strategy: “UK Trade & Investment helps UK companies win business from the development and operation of overseas port projects. As part of our work, we commissioned a report to identify new port projects in the high growth markets of Asia and Asia Pacific and to highlight possible business opportunities for the UK.”

He added: “This report is only available to British companies and we hope it will give them a commercial advantage over their competitors.”

The report gives an overview of each country illustrating some ongoing projects and outlining some of the issues that need to be addressed when participating in port projects.

The issue of port security is also an important focus in the report – it is estimated that the Asia Pacific region will account for almost 50% of the of the maritime security market by 2020. The port security sector is estimated to account for 45% of the total global spend on maritime security valued at nearly US$6bn. So security is an important issue to address when it comes to sizing up investment potential.
