US gateway for global commerce

When complete in 2014, it is hoped that Global Terminal Port Jersey at Bayonne will be one of the most advanced terminals in the region.

The expansion is a strategic move by the operator to improve the competitiveness of the ports at New York and New Jersey. The new terminal expansion will be able to handle the world’s largest container vessels and greater throughput – $1.7m teu per year in fact, making it one of the top terminals in the country by way of efficiency.

It is a clearly also a move by Global to protect the port’s position as a US gateway for global commerce.

James Devine, president and chief executive officer at Global Container Services USA, said: “Our expanded Global Terminal facility will come on line precisely in time to help meet the demands of larger vessels transiting the Suez Canal and new wider Panama Canal.”

He added: “Since the earliest days of this country, the bi-state port has been the engine that drives the region. We plan to be a very important piston in that engine going into the future.”

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey first acquired the land for the project which adjoins Global’s existing facility back in 2007. The expansion will create a new shared gate configuration on the Port Jersey peninsula between the existing facility and the new facility to increase trucking efficiency. There will also be intermodal rail connections via the adjacent redeveloped Greenville rail transfer facility.
