Pre-construction work underway in Poland

International Consultancy firm WYG has been appointed to prepare all pre-construction documents necessary for the work and to handle co-financing from the EU.

Tomasz Gierwatowski, managing director, WYG said: “So that the ports are prepared for the expected intensive increase in cargo handling in the Baltic Sea region and the shifting of cargo from roads to sea it is imperative that the infrastructure modernisation and port extensions take place.”

Situated on the shortest route linking Scandinavia with Central and Southern Europe, and on the Baltic maritime route linking Russia and Finland with Western Europe, both ports form a rapidly developing complex, with annual handling volumes already reaching 20m tonnes.

The project is part of a multiple year investment programme at the ports set to run until 2015, which includes the construction of new quays and modernisation, road improvement and work to rebuild rail infrastructure. The programme also includes the construction of an LNG discharging port in the outer port of Świnoujście.
