Piracy statistics make grim reading

A further 80 vessels were boarded, 25 were fired upon and there were an additional 52 attempted attacks reported. At least four crew members were killed.

A closer look at the IMB piracy statistics in terms of attempted and actual attacks also reveals that there were more attempted than successful attacks.

The IMB PRC have suggested that the decline in successful hijackings off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden may largely be attributed to the occupation of these regional waters by naval forces and merchant ships’ employment of privately contracted armed security personnel.
