East Coast terminals remain closed

The port condition Yankee – possible gale force winds – has now been set for New York and New Jersey leaving all marine facilities of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey closed. This includes Port Newark container terminal, APM Terminal, Maher terminal, Global terminal, New York container terminal, Red Hook container terminal and the Port Authority Marine terminal.

But it’s not all bad news, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Long Island Sound yesterday authorised operations to resume. The Coast Guard is strongly advising mariners to be exercise caution when travelling through the port and to treat aids to navigation as unreliable.

Recreational boats and commercial traffic are also being advised to transit at minimum safe speed if travelling on the Long Island Sound, including local rivers and inlets. Underwater obstacles, debris and heavy currents due to flooding are very real hazards.

The Coast Guard is awaiting further surveys and assessments before further waterways can be reopened.
