Oaklands executive director retires

Omar Benjamin is retiring after serving in the position of executive director for five years. In October 2012, Mr Benjamin was placed on leave following an alleged US $4,500 strip club expense going back to 2008. The investigation by the port’s outside counsel, international law firm Arnold & Porter, into the expense reimbursement practices and policies is continuing.

Meanwhile, the port’s maritime director, James Kwon, who is also under investigation over the alleged enpenditure, remains on administrative leave.

Acting executive director, Deborah Ale Flint, will continue to direct the Port of Oakland’s main business plans and growth initiatives while managing the port’s everyday operations.

The Port of Oakland plans to discuss further developments regarding policies and oversight at its regularly scheduled meeting later this week.
