New Liverpool terminal set to go ahead

Located in the River Mersey, the terminal will bring the largest container ships in the world, capable of handling ships carrying 13,500 containers – a significant increased compared to the current limit of 3,500.

The central location of the Liverpool2 terminal, will allow exporters, importers and shipping lines to connect to the UK’s major trade centres. It will also cut costs for exporters and importers, reduce emissions and remove over 150 million miles of transport from the UK’s roads and rail, according to Peel Ports.

It is hoped that the terminal will create 5,000 jobs and give the local job market a much needed boost. Peel Ports will be working with two local colleges, Liverpool Community College and Mersey Maritime Group, to offer local people the specialist training and qualifications needed to work at the terminal.

The port needs to secure three licences from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) before construction work can begin at the Liverpool2 deep water terminal though.

The MMO is expected to make a decision on whether dredging work can begin on the site in December. Work is due to start in early 2013 and operations are expected to begin in 2015.
