More trouble at Port of Oakland?
Officials from the Port of Oakland are assuring partners that operations will not be affected by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 labour actions, due to take place tonight and tomorrow.
The port has expressed its concern that picketing efforts in the port’s maritime area and at Oakland International Airport carried out by SEIU Local 1021, which represents employees in the janitorial, custodial and maintenance fields, could result in economic losses for both the port and its employees.
Deborah Ale Flint, acting executive director, Port of Oakland, said: “We’ve been prepared for this type of action and still hope to resolve the potential conflict. While the labour action at the airport will not have a major impact, union picketing at our container facility could cause economic hardship to the port and to union employees not just on the day of the action, but in terms of future long term business agreements.”
In an attempt to stop union action, an arbitrator is set to begin the non binding fact finding phase of impasse proceedings between the port and SEIU after union members rejected a tentative agreement for a new contract in March 2012.
Arbitrator meetings are expected to take place on 29th and 30th November and 3rd December.
